THE INSTITUTE OF NATURAL FIBRES IN POZNAŃ HAS DEVELOPED A TECHNOLOGY UTILISING FLAX AND HEMP SHIVES, PRESENTLY A WASTE MATERIAL, FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BEDDING FOR THE CULTIVATION OF EDIBLE MUSHROOMS (PLEUROTUS COLUMBIN U8, PWO TYPE). DUE TO THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, THE SHIVES GUARANTEE THAT THE CULTIVATION BEDDING CONSTITUTES THE MAIN SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS, WHICH DIRECTLY IMPACT THE YIELDS. THE BEDDING FOR PLEUTORUS CULTIVATION WITH HEMP SHIVES TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE CELLULAR STRUCTURE OF ANNUAL WOOD OF DICOTYLEDONS, ITS HIGH CONTENT OF CELLULOSE AND LIGNIN AS WELL AS HYGENIC, ANTI-SEPTIC AND REPELLENT PROPERTIES. THIS SOLUTION ALSO USES THE EXCEPTIONAL
SWELLING CAPACITY OF SHIVE PARTICLES, CONTENT OF SOLUBLE NUTRIENTS DRIED IN THE WOOD CELLS WHICH ARE GRADUALLY RELEASED TO THE GROWING FUNGI HYPHAE, STABILITY AND THERMAL BUFFER AS WELL AS GOOD WATER-GAS TRANSFORMATION.

The solution increases the profitability of edible mushroom production through utilisation of hemp shives in their cultivation, the shives are a waste material from fibre production. Hemp is a plant with phytosanitary properties and their plantations do not exhibit the presence of diseases and pests. Utilisation of hemp shives in edible mushroom cultivation also results in an increase of crop yields. Mushrooms cultivated on cereal straw are often ‘choked’ by mycelium of other fungi. The innovative formulation, combined with the original physical and chemical properties together with the preserved cellular structure of annual wood, provide optimum conditions for mycelium development and Pleutorus growth. Application of this innovative cultivation base results in increased crop health, yield reliability, improved quality and the appearance of the mushrooms as well as 20–25% increase of yield; additionally, the Pleutorus mushrooms do not contain heavy metals or fungi spores.
